“Perhaps it is because we look through it rather than at it that glass has not become part of the treasured fabric of our lives. The very thing that we value it for has also disqualified it from our affections: it is inert and invisible, not just optically, but culturally. ”
-Mark Miodownik, Stuff Matters
I was surprised to find an emotionally charged quote in the middle of a book on materials science and history- but this one resonated.
I think years of writing documents in a generic and disembodied voice, parenting with the goal of my children shining themselves through my guidance, and 30+ years constrained within the “good girl” value of remaining as unobtrusive as possible has often left me feeling as invisible as glass, and as often overlooked.
